In the course Machine Design II, students acquire a comprehensive theoretical understanding and basic knowledge in the field of machine elements. The machine elements covered are springs, connecting elements, belt and chain drives as well as clutches and brakes. The focus is placed both on the function analysis as well as the analysis and classification of the machine element in the overall machine system. In addition to these theoretical basics, the course also deals with stress-appropriate design as well as the design and technical drawing of the machine elements.

Course Content

With the knowledge acquired in the lecture, students can analyse and select suitable machine elements using relevant methods. Current technical standards are considered in the process. Based on this, students can design machine elements arithmetically and prove their strength. Students will also learn the design and presentation of machine elements in technical drawings. The acquired knowledge can be employed in systematic product development.

For the course Machine Design II, fundamental knowledge of higher mathematics, technical mechanics, materials science and in particular the courses Machine Design I and Introduction to CAD are recommended.

The following topics and machine elements are covered in the course:

  • Arithmetic proof of strength using FKM Standards
  • Springs
  • Connecting elements: Rivet joints, screws and screw joints, solder joints, adhesive joints, welded joints, shaft-hub joints
  • Belt and chain drives
  • Clutches and brakes
  • Technical drawing and design of selected machine elements

The exact contents can be found in the module handbook on RWTHonline. Lectures and exercises are offered only in German language.

Exercises

The lecture is complemented by tutorial exercises. In these exercises, the lecture contents are deepened using calculation examples. Students are taught how the basic knowledge imparted in the lecture is applied concretely to the arithmetic design of machine elements.

Additionally, the following activities are offered as part of the course:

  • In small group exercises, students can independently deepen their acquired knowledge using further calculation examples. The small group exercises are intensively supervised by our student staff.
  • During the whole semester, and especially before the exam, consultation sessions are offered. Here, students can discuss the content of the lecture and exercise with our student staff.
  • Before the exam, exam colloquia take place, in which all topics are intensively repeated, and exercises are presented.
  • Additional seminars are offered for third-time candidates, in which these students receive intensive support for the best possible exam preparation.
