The DevOps development approach is increasingly used in the IT industry for the delivery of value and represents an opportunity for the contemporary development of cyber-physical machines and plants. However, the direct transfer to machine and plant engineering is not given. Accordingly, the three paths of DevOps are prepared and, based on this, six prerequisites for machine and plant engineering are derived.

Accordingly, the three paths of DevOps are prepared and, based on this, six prerequisites for machine and plant engineering are derived. With the definition of development principles and the classification in the current development context, an adapted development pipeline results. Despite the general presentation, the usage for all kind of products is sensible. Therefore, a qualitative analysis puts the effort and benefit of different DevOps-compliant development activities into relation for four production strategies. Overall, DevOps in machine and plant engineering offers a systematic approach to creating an end-to-end value chain and is most likely to be used for long-life or high-volume products.
