For optimal fulfilment in terms of function, efficiency as well as accuracy, the Systems Engineering and Development Processes area from IGMR's Mechanism theory and Kinematics group develops specific methods and models to support product design of motion systems.
In terms of function fulfilment, efficiency and accuracy, moving systems are particularly challenging for product development. This is based on complex dependencies and dynamic interrelationships of components. The research and development of methods and models to support the design of motion systems is therefore a focus at IGMR.
The Systems Engineering and Design Processes group of IGMR develops methods and models to support the product design of motion systems. Based on a specific design process for motion systems, methods and models are developed that further support and simplify the design. This favors a time- and cost-efficient design of systems that are optimally tailored to a task.
The typical design process of a mechanism starts with the determination of the motion task and specific requirements. Based on this, a structural synthesis is first conducted. Subsequently, the mechanism is designed in dimensional synthesis and iteratively dimensioned with regard to kinetostatics and dynamics. After the selection of the actuators, prototype production can follow. This systematic approach also allows new, specialized solutions to be found that would remain hidden in a heuristic approach. This procedure is essential, especially for completely new applications with complex requirements. Further questions in this topic area are aimed at providing early assessments of the use of special components such as compliant mechanisms or folding mechanisms. Furthermore, the extent to which initial dynamic or kinetostatic analysis of mechanism can be taken into account early on during design is also being investigated.
